Layered security: no single point of failure

No one product stops every attack. Layered security means that if one control is beaten, the next one catches it. Here's how the layers fit together.

Click through the layers

8 layers, from your people to our SOC. Each one is designed to catch what the others miss.

People

Your team is both the most targeted layer and the best defence. Trained people spot the scam that technology misses.

  • Monthly phishing simulations
  • Short, relevant awareness training
  • Clear reporting routes for anything suspicious

Why layers beat a bigger wall

Attackers only need one way in. A single strong control, however good, is still a single point of failure. Layers force an attacker to beat several different defences in a row, and every extra step is another chance for us to spot them.

The layers are also designed to work together. A suspicious sign-in, an odd email and unusual file activity might each look minor on their own. Seen together by our SOC, they tell a story.

How we build your layers

  1. Map

We list every control you already have across the 8 layers, and where the gaps are.

  2. Fill the gaps

Highest-risk gaps first: usually MFA, email filtering, endpoint detection and backup.

  3. Connect

Every layer reports to our SOC so a suspicious sign-in and an odd email are seen together.

  4. Prove it

A vulnerability scan or penetration test shows the layers hold, and Cyber Essentials certifies it.

Signs you've got a wall, not layers

  • Antivirus and a firewall, and not much else
  • Email without multi-factor authentication
  • Backups that sit on the same network as the data
  • Alerts that go to an inbox nobody reads at 2am
  • Staff who have never seen a phishing simulation
  • No test has ever been run against your defences

Layered security questions

We're a small business. Do we really need all 8 layers?
Yes, but not all at the same depth. A 15-person firm needs MFA, patching, email filtering, endpoint detection, backup and training as much as a 400-person one; what changes is the tooling and how much of it we run for you. Cyber Essentials covers 5 of the layers as a baseline.
Isn't this expensive?
Layered security is mostly configuration and process on tools you already pay for, particularly in Microsoft 365, plus monitoring. It costs a fraction of one ransomware incident, and it's included in our AISP plan rather than sold as add-ons.
How does this relate to Cyber Essentials?
Cyber Essentials is the government baseline for 5 of these layers. Layered security is how you go beyond the certificate to security that works day to day, with detection and response on top.
Can you work alongside our existing IT provider?
Yes. We can provide the security layers and SOC while your provider runs day-to-day support. We agree who owns what up front so nothing falls between us.
